About the museum
The museum occupies the first floor of the medieval Porta Romana tower in Gubbio, near the church of Sant'Agostino. The tower, dating from around 1400, defended one of the city's ancient entrances with a triple system of drawbridge, iron portcullis and gate. Originally it was some 25 metres tall, and its battlements were removed when it lost its defensive function.
The collection, opened in 1993 as a small private museum, traces the phases of traditional lustreware production, a technique of Islamic origin that gives the surface iridescent reflections in ruby red, yellow, green and gold, typical of Gubbio. It contains over 250 works by various local artists, from the 16th century to the 1950s (20th century), and new pieces are added every four months.
Among the most important pieces are works by Mastro Giorgio Andreoli, active in Gubbio between 1495 and 1555 and one of the first in Italy to produce lustreware, such as the dish with Saint Anthony of Padua of 1531, signed on the front and on the back.
