About the museum
The museum was founded in 1913 by Raffaele Marrocco, who directed it and enriched it with purchases and donations; for many years it was known as the Museo Alifano. In 1973 the Soprintendenza removed the archaeological materials, and the institution remained closed to the public until its reopening on 16 June 2013.
The seat is the monumental complex of San Tommaso d'Aquino, a former Dominican convent and church built between 1394 and 1414, with two cloisters; the main cloister preserves frescoes of the 16th and 17th centuries. The convent was suppressed in 1809 and later housed public offices and a school before becoming the seat of the museum.
On the ground floor are the archaeological section on the Samnites, titled “Gens fortissima Italiae”, the Roman-era epigraphic section, a collection of musical instruments donated in 2023 and a historic pharmacy of the early 20th century. On the first floor are the civic collection, with objects from the Risorgimento to the two world wars, dolls in traditional Matese costume, ceramics, weapons and busts, the picture gallery, parchments and manuscripts (including an imperial privilege of 1730), and the instruments of the meteorological-astronomical observatory. The museum also has an auditorium for cultural activities.
