About the museum
The civic museum is housed on the ground floor of the town hall palazzo in Cusano Mutri, in the province of Benevento, and is divided into two sections: one devoted to rural life and one to the geology and palaeontology of the area.
The rural life section documents the way of life and the daily activities of the town with around 300 objects in two themed rooms. The first room recreates domestic interiors with furniture and fittings from the late 19th century, household and field tools, traditional clothing and an iron collar with spikes that shepherds once used to protect their dogs from wolves. The museum also holds the largest wooden spoon in the world, 5.32 metres long and weighing 111 kilograms, recognised by Guinness World Records. The second room brings together tools for working stone, iron, wool and leather, along with a cobbler’s bench.
The geopalaeontological section, in one room of the palazzo, uses photographic panels and finds to show how the southern Apennines formed and how fossilisation takes place. It includes casts of fish and reptiles from the Pietraroja deposit, a piece of copal containing small insects, shells and Cretaceous fossils, and a diorama of Ciro, the small fossil dinosaur Scipionyx samniticus.
