About the museum

The museum of the Contrada della Torre is housed in one of the most evocative places in the Salicotto district. Architectural features from different periods are still visible within its rooms, from the Etruscan and Roman to the medieval eras: traces of the 13th-century Sienese city walls, a cistern dating to the 1st century AD, and a Renaissance granary pit.

The most important work from a historical and artistic point of view is the 1546 panel by Sodoma, Andata di Cristo al Calvario. Precious vestments and liturgical furnishings come from the oratory of San Giacomo Maggiore, including two altar frontals of fine fabric, and the 1532 bronze bell by Antonio da Siena, cast from the metal of Florentine cannons after the victory of Camollia in 1526.

The display follows a chronological order and opens with the costumes, from a horse blanket (gualdrappa) of the mid-18th century to the first official renewal of the Palio in 1839. A display case is dedicated to the four ancient masgalani. In the Sala delle Vittorie, named after the architect Giuseppe Partini, the route runs through the drappelloni kept since 1767, with the ceiling decorated in 1923 by Vittorio Zani. One section houses modern and contemporary art, with works by artists associated with the Torre, such as Mino Maccari.
