About the museum

The museum opened in 1984 in the east wing of the Abbazia Florense, after two exhibitions set up in 1982 and 1983 in the abbey's side aisle. It is dedicated to the traditions and customs of San Giovanni in Fiore and the Sila, and is recognised by the Calabria Region as one of its regional museums.

The route unfolds over seven rooms on two floors plus a basement, arranged by type and theme: the goldsmith's and the shoemaker's workshops, the cycle of pig rearing and other rural production, household furnishings and weaving, farm tools and winemaking. The building also houses a library specialising in regional history and culture.

The second room houses the photographic holdings of Saverio Marra, with more than 2,500 glass plates made mainly between 1914 and 1946, of which around 190 are on display. It is considered one of the most important historical photographic archives in southern Italy.
