About the museum
The museum was founded in 2019 from the bequest to the Comune di Grosseto of a group of works collected over his lifetime by the Florentine art dealer Gianfranco Luzzetti, of Grosseto origin. The 64 works donated to the city carry out a project developed over twenty years: to create a museum able to attract visitors, strengthen the community's sense of belonging and bring new generations closer to beauty.
The venue is the Polo culturale Le Clarisse, in the former convent of Santa Chiara, built from the late 16th century and enlarged in the 17th century, municipal property since 1995 and restored at the beginning of the new century. The museum occupies the ground floor of the building and includes the nearby Chiesa dei Bigi, the former church of Santa Chiara; the opening has re-established the original link between the convent and the church, the only example of Baroque art in the city.
The core of the collection concerns 17th-century Florentine art, with works by Santi di Tito, Cigoli, Passignano and four paintings by Pier Dandini, to whom a room is dedicated. There are also paintings of the Roman school, of northern Italy and of the 18th century, including Corrado Giaquinto, and two 19th-century landscapes.
