Parco archeologico di Roselle

Archaeological park of the ancient Etruscan and Roman city of Roselle, near Grosseto: Etruscan walls, forum, amphitheatre, baths and the Domus degli Augustales.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

The park lies about 10 km north of Grosseto, along the road to Siena, on two hills (North and South) linked by a small valley. Roselle dominated the south-eastern side of the ancient Lake Prile, a natural route to the sea, and the River Ombrone made trade possible with the Val d’Orcia and the cities of inland Etruria.

The city was settled in an organised way from the first half of the 7th century BC. In the 6th century BC it experienced considerable growth, of which the main Etruscan monument survives: the city walls, more than three kilometres long and visible over long stretches. In 294 BC Roselle was conquered by Rome under the consul Lucius Postumius Megellus; the monumentalisation of the city, with the amphitheatre, the forum complex, the basilica and the baths, dates from the imperial age.

In the late imperial age Roselle declined and many buildings were reused. In the 5th century AD it became a bishopric, and between the late 6th and early 7th centuries it was conquered by the Lombards, of which the church built over the imperial baths and the cemetery remain. In 1138 a bull of Pope Innocent II moved the diocese to Grosseto: from then on the inhabited centre, by then a castrum (fortified settlement), was gradually abandoned.
