About the museum
The Municipal Museum of Natural History and Mining Art in Sommatino illustrates the geological history of the area and the stages of sulphur extraction. It is housed in the multipurpose social centre on Viale Fontaine and was entrusted in 2015 to the Filippo Terranova cultural association, which in the same year reorganised and expanded the collections and set up the new entrance and reception desk.
The themes covered include the activity of the sulphur mines, the geology of the Serie gessoso-solfifera (the gypsum and sulphur geological series), fossils and micropalaeontology, as well as a meteorite found near Riesi. The association offers guided excursions to explore the history, nature and geology of the area, and educational activities for schools.
