About the museum
The Museo civico “S. Lauricella” in Ravanusa houses finds from the excavation campaigns on Monte Saraceno, the result of a collaboration between the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Messina and the Soprintendenza (heritage authority) of Agrigento. The display was made possible thanks to the commitment of local institutions.
The collection includes polychrome terracottas that decorated the roofs of sacred buildings, among them a gorgoneion, painted clay altars (arule), tableware, amphorae, loom weights and an unusual clay flask in the shape of a tortoise.
A piece of great artistic value is a pyxis-shaped vase, placed on the back of a small donkey and decorated with a Dionysian group featuring a satyr. It comes from a child's sarcophagus in the necropolis of via Olimpica and dates from between 520 and 460 BC.
