About the museum
The MACA, the Museo d’arte contemporanea di Alcamo, is housed in the monumental complex of the former Jesuit College, in Piazza Ciullo. The building dates from 1652, while the loggia is from the following century; after a restoration lasting seven years it became the seat of the municipality’s representative offices, of the Biblioteca civica Sebastiano Bagolino and, of course, of the museum, which opened to the public in October 2017.
The museum is conceived as a modern museum space which, alongside the display and preservation of heritage, hosts experimental moments in visual languages, study days and educational projects devoted to art, music, dance, theatre, cinema, architecture and design. The logo was chosen through an ideas competition.
The exhibition space, of almost a thousand square metres, occupies the first floor; on the ground floor are the reception hall, the conference room in the former Jesuit chapel and the bookshop. The route includes archaeological finds from Monte Bonifato and the castle of Calatubo, canvases by Turi Simeti, by Vito Bongiorno, to whom a permanent room is dedicated, by Gisella Giovenco and by Sergio Zavattieri, plaster casts by Nicola Rubino and works by other artists.
