Parco archeologico di Segesta

Archaeological park on the hill of Segesta with the large unfinished Doric temple, the Hellenistic theatre and the remains of the Elymian city.

Opening hoursAdmission €14

About the museum

Segesta was an important centre of ancient western Sicily. The first houses on the slopes date from the late 6th century BC, while the period of greatest prosperity falls between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, when the city was reorganised on the model of the cities of Anatolia. The settlement occupied two hills connected by a saddle: on the northern acropolis were the public buildings, the agora and the theatre, and on the southern one the dwellings.

The Doric temple, built outside the walls around 430–420 BC, is a peripteral building with 6 × 14 columns, inspired by the models of Selinunte. It seems never to have been completed, and the deity worshipped there remains unknown. The theatre, from the mid-2nd century BC, was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. The walls had several phases, with the Porta Stazzo and the Porta di Valle; outside the walls the sanctuary of Mango and a Hellenistic necropolis have been identified.

On the northern acropolis there are also late antique and Byzantine traces, a medieval Muslim village with a mosque, a Norman-Swabian settlement with a castle, and a church founded in 1442. The archaeological park also includes other areas of the territory: Mokarta, Monte Castellazzo, San Miceli, the Rocca di Entella and the Grotte di Scurati.
