About the museum
After the Belice earthquake of 1968, Mayor Ludovico Corrao invited artists to donate works to the town being rebuilt. Among the first to respond were Pietro Consagra, Carla Accardi and Emilio Isgrò, followed by Mario Schifano, Arnaldo Pomodoro and Alighiero Boetti. The museum opened in March 1980 with the donation of 83 works from the collection of Nino Soldano.
The collection includes paintings, prints and sculptures by Italian and foreign artists and comprises around 2,000 works; many are kept in storage and shown in rotation in exhibitions. In 2004 the design section (MAD) was set up, and in 2009 the educational section Di.Gib.art. In 2012 the museum was named after Ludovico Corrao.
After a long closure, the MAC reopened in July 2021 in a new building with over 400 works on display, eight rooms (one dedicated to Mario Schifano), an auditorium and a library with a contemporary art section.
