About the museum
The museum was founded in 2014 at the initiative of the maestro Fausto Cannone, who donated to his native town his collection of musical instruments from many parts of the world, with the aim of promoting cultural diversity and making the world’s musical heritage accessible to all.
The seat is the former church of San Giacomo de Spada, in the historic centre of Alcamo. In the Middle Ages its name designated one of the four quarters of the walled town; it is first documented in 1379 as a simple chapel or altar, was built as a single-nave church in 1571–72 and was enlarged to its present size between 1625 and 1626. After deconsecration the building housed the municipal library from 1875 to 1968.
The collection comprises 232 instruments, arranged by family: chordophones such as the sarangi, erhu, oud, kora and bouzouki; aerophones such as the khen, suling, quena and ciaramella; idiophones such as the balafon and maracas; membranophones such as the djembe, conga and dholaki; and some electrophones, including historic electric guitars.
