About the museum
The museum opened on 5 May 2005 on the initiative of Monsignor Alfonso Maria Farina, with the aim of presenting the Christian heritage and religious culture of the area. It is housed in the Torre Merlata palace, in the medieval village of Castellabate.
The works, dating from the 16th to the 20th century, come from the parishes and chapels of Castellabate and bear witness to the devotion of the community. From the 17th century onwards the number of chapels belonging to noble families increased in the town, and bequests and donations enriched the collections.
The route is organised in four rooms: in the first, portraits of canons from 1647 to 1990; in the second, 110 nativity figures and silverware; in the third, liturgical furnishings and vestments; and in the fourth, sculptures and paintings. Among the pieces most cherished by the community is the banner of San Costabile, in silk embroidered with gold, commissioned after the cholera outbreak of 1884 and made by the Orfanotrofio di Napoli.
