About the museum
The Museo archeologico di Agropoli is housed in the Palazzo Civico delle Arti, in Via Pisacane, a town-centre building dating from 1892. From the 1970s the building held a collection of finds from the municipal area, known as the Antiquarium. In February 2026 the municipality approved the transformation of this collection into an independent museum, with its own statute and a scientific committee set up together with the heritage authority (Soprintendenza).
The displays cover the history of the area from protohistory to the Middle Ages. Of particular note are the Lucanian grave goods from the 4th century BC and the Late Antique finds from the San Marco necropolis, including a Roman sarcophagus from the 3rd century AD with a Dionysian relief and a Christian funerary inscription from the 5th century AD.
Numerous amphorae recovered from the sea, dating from the 7th to the 4th century BC, and stone and lead anchors from the Greek and Roman periods are also on display. The museum is part of the cultural complex of the Palazzo Civico delle Arti, together with the Spazio Mare and the Biblioteca Civica.
