About the museum

The Museo vivo del mare is located in Pioppi, a coastal hamlet of Pollica in the Parco nazionale del Cilento, in Palazzo Vinciprova, a 16th-century building donated to the Comune (municipality) by the Vinciprova family. The same palace also houses the Museo vivente della Dieta Mediterranea, linked to the American physiologist Ancel Keys, who lived in Pioppi for about forty years.

The museum is run by Legambiente and is open all year round, closed on Tuesdays. The route includes thirteen tanks with fish and marine organisms from the waters of the Cilento, including a touch tank where visitors can handle fish and molluscs, tanks devoted to moray eels, Posidonia oceanica and octopus, and two tanks with species from depths of more than twenty metres.

The museum also offers educational activities, while every summer the garden hosts a programme dedicated to the Mediterranean Diet, with talks, music and tastings.
