About the museum
The Museo Paleontologico di Magliano Vetere is a museum, educational and scientific centre linked to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It arose from research begun in 1984 that identified numerous fossil sites of great scientific interest on the Alburni massif and on the Vesole and Chianiello mountain ridge, some with finds new to science. Magliano Vetere was chosen after a new fossil site with Cretaceous land plants was discovered in the municipal area.
The exhibition route occupies four large rooms and guides visitors from the first stages of the formation of the Universe, the Solar System and the Earth to the geological processes that gave rise to the Apennines. The evolution of life is summarised through significant fossils, which introduce the Cilento fossil deposits, widely represented; among the finds is the well-known dinosaur Scipionyx.
In the central room a large walk-through diorama allows groups to see a Cretaceous environment of about 100 million years ago, with life-size flora and fauna. A set of workshops allows visitors to simulate the work of palaeontologists, from observation under the microscope to excavation in the field.
