About the museum

The museum is housed in the oratory and former hospice of the Confraternita della Trinità e di San Bernardino, a lay brotherhood founded in 1450 in Castelmuzio, a small village in the municipality of Trequanda. The link with Saint Bernardino of Siena is very old: the saint preached several times in the village between 1405 and 1410 and, according to tradition, rested on a large boulder. In the 17th century the boulder was split in two, one part placed in the monument at the entrance to the village and the other beneath the altar table. The interior of the oratory was restored in 1867.

Since 1973 the church and the adjoining rooms have housed the Museo d’Arte Sacra, which holds works that belonged to the brotherhood. These are mainly paintings of the Sienese school from the 14th to the 16th century, alongside silverware, liturgical furnishings and textiles produced between the 16th and 19th centuries.

Among the most significant works are a Madonna with Saints attributed to Pietro Francesco degli Orioli and a Madonna with Child from the circle of Duccio, as well as paintings close to the schools of Beccafumi, Domenico Manetti and Sano di Pietro. Also preserved are an Etruscan terracotta cinerary urn from Abbadia Sicille and a small panel attributed to Sano di Pietro, bearing the monogram of Christ, kept in an 18th-century tabernacle of gold and enamel.
