About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Conservatorio di San Carlo, in Piazza San Carlo in Pienza: a building of medieval origin, substantially transformed in the following centuries to house a college.
The rooms display the archaeological and Etruscan collections of the area and an exhibition route documenting the urban and architectural history of the area from prehistory to the Late Roman period, up to the formation of medieval Corsignano and its transformation into Renaissance Pienza. The prehistoric finds come from the settlement of Cava Barbieri; the Etruscan ones belong to the Landi Newton collection, owned by the Opera del Duomo, with over 500 pieces, mostly of the Archaic period, from the Borghetto necropolis. Other materials, dating to the 4th–3rd century BC, come from the area of Sant’Anna in Camprena, while the Roman period is documented by a residential building at the locality of San Gregorio.
The visit can extend to the surrounding area, where the archaeological site of Cava Barbieri and the Pianoia necropolis are located, with seven rock-cut tombs from the 2nd–1st century BC.
