About the museum
Petroio, a hamlet of the municipality of Trequanda, has a long tradition of working terracotta, and its potters have long been regarded as custodians of art and culture. This led to the idea of setting up the museum, opened in 2000, which tells the story of the continuity between past and present and between craftsmanship and design.
The museum is housed in a palazzo of the 13th century. The route begins on the ground floor with modern terracotta products, next to a photographic panel showing the historic pieces found in the houses and streets of the village. The display cases hold 20th-century objects linked to Italian history, such as a terracotta Balilla figure, a plaque of the local section of the PCI (Italian Communist Party) and material from the Florence fair of the 1950s. There are also reconstructions of the clay pit and of a workshop with the typical kiln.
At the end of the route a teaching workshop lets visitors model small objects, which are then fired in the kiln with the help of the staff. The museum also offers guided visits to the terracottas that decorate the village.
