About the museum
The sacred art museum is located in Via Santa Caterina, next to Piazza Duomo, in the historic centre of Chiaramonte Gulfi. It collects and promotes the liturgical and artistic heritage linked to Christian worship and local religious tradition.
The route is organised in four sections: the religious rite, sculpture, painting, and furnishings and ceramic wall coverings. The main room displays vestments and sacred furnishings, including copes in gold and silk, chasubles, stoles, albs and capes, a silver monstrance with a small statue of Saint Catherine at its base, silver chalices and a mother-of-pearl altar cross.
The sculpture section presents the terracottas of the artist Giuseppe Criscione and of his children Alberto and Paola, including more than thirty figures of the Iblei ethnographic nativity, set against a model of the architecture and landscape of Chiaramonte. The painting section includes canvases by S. Montanucci showing the interiors of the churches of San Giovanni Battista, the Santissimo Salvatore, San Vito and the Sanctuary of Gulfi.
