About the museum

The Museo dell'Olio occupies the lower floors of Palazzo Montesano, in the centre of Chiaramonte Gulfi, in seven rooms with barrel vaults. It is dedicated to the olive-oil tradition of the Iblei area, one of the most important farming activities in the region.

The rooms house the tools used to extract olive oil, including a press dated 1614 and a stone millstone, alongside a hydraulic press from the early 20th century. The collection also includes tools and containers linked to growing and storing oil: the iron cafiso, tin jars, quartare (large clay jars) and oil cruets, iron ploughs and hoes, baskets and panniers, pruning shears, saws and a hand drill.

The museum is part of the circuit of the Palazzo Montesano museums; according to the available information, visits are managed by the Pro Loco di Chiaramonte Gulfi.
