About the museum
The museum occupies seven rooms on the piano nobile of the historic Palazzo Montesano in Chiaramonte Gulfi, which also houses other municipal museums. The collection is attributed to the late Duccio Belgiorno of Modica, a passionate collector of curiosities.
The rooms present about 600 instruments from many parts of the world, including rare or unique examples: two Tibetan flutes made from human shin bones, a damaru drum with skull caps as its resonating body, tribal instruments from Central Africa, Asia, the Americas and Papua New Guinea, zanze (thumb pianos) from Kenya and Zimbabwe, three Argentine charangos made with armadillo shells, Slavic balalaikas, a Brazilian berimbau and three Indian sitars.
