About the museum
The Museo dei Misteri was opened on 7 October 2006 in Campobasso, in a building on Via Trento formerly the seat of ENAL, set up with regional funding. It was created to give a permanent home to the Ingegni designed in the mid-18th century by the Campobasso sculptor Paolo Saverio di Zinno (1718–1781) and built with the skill of local blacksmiths; they are paraded through the city streets every year in the Corpus Domini procession.
The museum was promoted by the Associazione Misteri e Tradizioni, which runs it and aims to preserve the machines, protect them from the wear of time and make them a subject of scientific and tourist interest.
The visit takes place in three spaces: the exhibition room “Rino Savastano”, with period costumes, historic photographs and catalogues of the characters of the last forty years; the screening room “Gino Aurisano”, with 40 seats, where footage of the procession from 1929 to today is shown; and the Sala degli Ingegni “Cosmo Teberino”, where the thirteen machines and their structural and artistic features can be seen up close.
