About the museum
The Museo internazionale del presepio in miniatura “Guido Colitti” is housed in Villa Colitti, in the centre of Campobasso. It was founded in 1932 by Guido Colitti, a collector who also made Nativity scenes himself, starting from his private collection.
The collection includes around 400 miniature Nativity scenes from many parts of the world, including Mexico, Japan and Australia. They are made from very different materials and techniques: carved wood, folded card, coloured terracotta, mother-of-pearl, cork and majolica. Some pieces are by Colitti himself, including a cork Nativity with 19th-century terracotta figures. Of particular interest is also the collection of Neapolitan shepherd figures from the 18th and 19th centuries.
