About the museum
The Museo Palazzo Pistilli is housed in an ancient noble palace in the heart of the historic centre of Campobasso, in Salita San Bartolomeo, formerly the home of the family that owned the collection. The museum opened on 16 May 2014 and traces six centuries of art history through the collection that Michele Praitano assembled over more than fifty years of research in Italy and abroad and donated to the State.
Since December 2014 the museum has been run by the Ministry of Culture, first through the Polo museale del Molise and, since December 2019, through the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali del Molise (Regional Directorate of National Museums of Molise).
On the ground floor are displayed sixteenth-century paintings, Neapolitan majolica and eighteenth-century painted ceramics, together with a twentieth-century copy of the Venus de' Medici. On the upper floor are paintings from the mid-18th to the early 20th century, with landscapes, mythological subjects and portraits. The works are displayed alongside the collections of Giovanni and Giuseppe Ottavio Eliseo, which include 19th-century painting inspired by realism, Impressionism and Classicism.
