About the museum
The museum tells the story of schooling and popular education in Italy. The route is organised into five sections: three, in chronological order, trace the history of schools and school institutions from Italian unification to the present day; the other two are devoted to the material culture of schooling and to its protagonists.
The display includes rare collections of teachers’ journals, children’s periodicals and textbooks, as well as a rich collection of teaching aids, partly digitised: exercise books, satchels, inkwells, compasses, maps, abacuses, instruments for teaching natural sciences, chemistry and physics, and furniture such as school desks. The collections have been enriched through donations and loans from private individuals and public bodies.
The collections are complemented by the “Archivio della memoria” (Archive of Memory), a body of video interviews with female and male teachers who recount their professional experience in autobiographical form, and by period photographs. A reconstructed classroom from the first half of the 20th century completes the display.
