About the museum
The Gelato Museum Carpigiani was opened in September 2012 at the Carpigiani headquarters in Anzola dell’Emilia, in former industrial spaces converted into a facility for the study of the history, culture and technology of artisan gelato. The company has been producing gelato machines since 1946. It presents itself as the only museum dedicated to the history of gelato.
The route, over more than 1,000 square metres, is interactive and unfolds on three levels of reading: the evolution of gelato over time, the history of production technology, and the places and ways of consumption. It holds 20 original machines, multimedia stations, 10,000 photographs and historical documents, period tools and accessories, and unpublished video interviews. The narrative begins with the preservation of snow and iced drinks in antiquity, passes through the Renaissance and the birth of the gelato maker’s trade, and reaches the worldwide spread of gelato, with the role of gelato makers from Zoldo, Cadore and Friuli.
Visits are guided and by reservation, often combined with workshops and tastings. The site also houses the Carpigiani Gelato University and a gelateria open to the public with a workshop on view.
