About the museum
The Museo del Corallo in Ravello is a private museum opened in 1986 by Giorgio Filocamo, who wanted to preserve the antique coral objects inherited from his family. It is located in Piazza Duomo, next to the cathedral, and admission is free.
The route documents the development of coral-working techniques and shows the antique tools used to turn the raw material into objects of art. The collections comprise more than 600 pieces, dating from the Roman period to the twentieth century, including engraved mother-of-pearl, shells and a rich series of cameos.
Among the most representative pieces are a seventeenth-century crucifix in coral of Sicilian workmanship, a Madonna dated 1532, a 3rd-century AD Roman amphora with an internal coral formation, and coral nativity scenes from the eighteenth-century Neapolitan tradition.
