About the museum

The Museo del Duomo di Ravello had been proposed since 1973 and was created in 1983 with the involvement of the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) of Salerno. The original display occupied only the cathedral crypt, covered by cross vaults and crossed by a granite colonnade, once the seat of the Congrega del Carmine. In 1994 extension works added a second exhibition space along the right aisle.

The rooms hold classical and medieval works: cinerary urns, sarcophagi, sculptures, mosaics, carved stone ornaments and silver objects from marble furnishings that no longer exist. Among the most important pieces are the bust of Sigilgaida Rufolo, the remains of the ancient ciborium, the mosaic pluteus known as “il Falconiere” (the Falconer), the reliquary bust of Saint Barbara and an 18th-century crozier with a statuette of the martyrdom of Saint Pantaleon.

The painting section, with works from the 16th to the 19th century from the chapels and neighbouring churches, is displayed in the church of the Corpo di Cristo and in the Via Tecta, and is not currently open to visitors.
