About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Amalfi opened on 1 July 1995 to preserve and present objects linked to the religious history of the diocese, mainly from the cathedral of Sant’Andrea and the surrounding area.
The museum is housed in the Basilica del Crocifisso, the oldest part of the cathedral complex, together with the nearby Chiostro del Paradiso. Access is through the cloister, which originally served as a cemetery for the city’s noble families.
The cloister displays a Greek sarcophagus with the Abduction of Proserpina, dating from the first half of the 2nd century AD, a Roman sarcophagus with the Wedding of Peleus and Thetis, and fragments of Romanesque ambos. On the walls is a Crucifixion attributed to Roberto d’Oderisio and, in the basilica, frescoes by the Sienese school. The cathedral treasury includes a mitre dating from before 1297, a reliquary with the Sacred Manna and a silver altar frontal of 1711; among the paintings and sculptures stand out the bas-relief of the Madonna della Neve attributed to Francesco Laurana and the Madonna dell’Idra in polychrome wood.
