About the museum
The Museo del Duomo di Cagliari opened in 2004 in rooms adjoining the Cathedral of Santa Maria in the Castello district. It holds part of the cathedral’s treasury, made up of gifts and bequests from the archbishops of Cagliari and of liturgical objects donated over time.
The route extends over five floors, one of them below street level, connected by an internal staircase and a panoramic lift with a view of the city. On display are sacred silverware such as chalices, pyxes, monstrances and processional crosses, vestments, wooden statues and paintings.
Among the main works are the Retablo dei Beneficiati, a large altarpiece in Catalan style from the first half of the 16th century; the Compianto sul Cristo morto, a group of seven wooden statues dating from the 15th and 16th centuries; and the Triptych of Clement VII, a copy of a lost work attributed to Rogier van der Weyden that reached Cagliari after the Sack of Rome in 1527. In the Sala del Tesoro, traces of the external decoration of the cathedral’s south transept are visible.
