About the museum

The Passeggiata coperta (covered promenade) lies within the Bastione di Saint Remy, in Piazza Costituzione, on the ancient curtain walls of Cagliari’s medieval city walls. The bastion takes its name from the first Piedmontese viceroy, the baron of Saint Remy. The “Umberto I” terrace and the gallery below were designed in 1896 by Giuseppe Costa and Fulgenzio Setti and inaugurated in 1902 as a banqueting hall.

During the 20th century the rooms were used as an infirmary during the First World War, as a complementary school in the 1920s, and later as a Treasury office and shelter for displaced people. In the late 1940s they housed the first International Fair of Sardinia. Bombing in 1943 damaged the double staircase and the triumphal arch, which were later rebuilt.

The Galleria dello Sperone connects to the Passeggiata. It forms part of the defensive works designed in the 16th century by the military engineer Rocco Cappellino to protect Cagliari from Muslim raids. The vaulted casemate was used for military purposes and as a gun emplacement; other parts served as a prison, as a public cistern supplying water to the Castello district and, during the Second World War, as an air-raid shelter.
