About the museum

The museum is named after San Prisco, first bishop of the diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, and was inaugurated on 14 February 2008 at the wish of Bishop Gioacchino Illiano. Before then the diocese had never had a museum that systematically gathered the works of art and the testimonies of faith of the area.

It is housed on the ground floor of the former episcopal seminary, a building founded in the 16th century by Bishop Paolo Giovio the Younger and located at the start of the Vescovado district, not far from the cathedral. After the suppression of 1865, the closure of 1975 and the earthquake of 1980, the palace was restored, and the museum was designed by the architect Francesco Supino on about 180 square metres of rooms, with an inner courtyard.

In the main hall is the large silver bust that the people of Nocera commissioned in 1771 to house the relics of San Prisco. Other rooms hold paintings, in particular by Angelo Solimena, wooden sculptures, manuscripts and liturgical furnishings such as monstrances, chalices, crosiers and reliquaries. Among the oldest pieces are a parchment of 1066 on the boundaries of the diocese of Sarno and a 15th-century chalice bearing the oldest known hallmark of the city of Naples.
