About the museum
The Museum of Labour and Popular Traditions of Historic Versilia was inaugurated in 1996 on the upper floors of the Palazzo Mediceo in Seravezza, a residence commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici between 1561 and 1565 for visits to the Bottino silver mines and the marble quarries. The building has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. It later served as the summer residence of the Medici and the Lorraine family, and as the seat of the Municipality until 1967; from 1982 it has hosted exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
The collections comprise over two thousand objects, dating from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century, which document the economic activities and traditions of historic Versilia. The route unfolds through eleven rooms, starting with an image of the territory and of the influence of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and then illustrating wine and cereal production, the gathering of forest products, domestic life and the cooking of former times, with a room dedicated to weaving at the loom.
An important section is devoted to the quarrying and working of marble, with tools, machines and models for quarrying, transport and processing techniques, and to metal and iron working, an activity revived by the Medici. The museum is run by the Fondazione Terre Medicee together with the palace.
