About the museum
In this house in Valdicastello, a hamlet of Pietrasanta, Giosuè Carducci was born on 27 July 1835. He was a poet and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1906. The family left the village in 1838 to move to other places in Tuscany, and Carducci returned to Versilia only a few times in his life, including in 1877 and 1890.
After the poet’s death in 1907, the building was declared a national monument. In 1912 the Comune di Pietrasanta bought it through a public subscription and designated it a house museum. In 1950 the village was renamed Valdicastello Carducci, and the national poetry prize “Giosuè Carducci” was established.
The visit takes place in the four rooms the family occupied on the side facing the stream and features furnishings, personal mementos and information panels on the life and work of the poet. The museum is run by the Comune di Pietrasanta, which also offers educational activities for schools.
