Wide selection of works by Igor Mitoraj from 1975 to 2013, including jewellery and sculptures from his studio in Pietrasanta. The exhibition illustrates the origins of the museum's collection and is the first step of a broader research project.
About the museum
The Fondazione Museo Igor Mitoraj was established on 23 March 2022 by the Ministry of Culture, the Tuscany Region and the Comune di Pietrasanta, in implementation of an enhancement agreement signed in 2018. It is a non-profit participatory foundation with statutory and management autonomy, based at Viale Oberdan 35.
The museum originates from the donation to the Italian State of 69 works by the artist by Jean-Paul Sabatié, heir to Mitoraj’s estate and today president of the Foundation. The inaugural exhibition, “Mitoraj Present”, presents this gift for the first time; it includes materials, formats and themes of different kinds.
Igor Mitoraj, born in 1944, trained in Kraków, moved to Paris in 1968 and opened his studio in Pietrasanta in 1979; he took part in the Biennale di Venezia of 1986 and died in Paris in 2014. According to the statute, the Foundation also aims to promote contemporary art initiatives of national and international importance and to enhance the craft knowledge of Pietrasanta.
