About the museum
The museum grew out of a collection of archaeological finds from research carried out across the territory from the 1960s onwards by the Gruppo Speleologico e Archeologico Versiliese led by Professor Bruno Antonucci, in collaboration with the Soprintendenza Archeologica and the University of Pisa. Founded in 1968, it was named after Antonucci in 1995.
It is housed in Palazzo Moroni, in Piazza del Duomo, a 17th-century building with a double external staircase, created by joining two buildings to house the Monte Pio, the Chancery and the assembly hall, and later the seat of the Biblioteca Civica and the Archivio Storico Comunale (municipal historical archive). After a period of closure for work on the building, the rooms were re-laid out on the ground floor with a new design.
The finds come exclusively from the Versilia and span from prehistory to the Middle Ages: palaeontological material, evidence of the Copper Age, the Etruscan and Ligurian section with San Rocchino, a pile-dwelling village on Lake Massaciuccoli, and all the Etruscan funerary cippi of the area, followed by Roman and medieval finds. From 1 October 2026 the museum is closed for maintenance works.
