About the museum
The museum is housed in the Rocca of Riolo Terme, a medieval fortress whose construction began in 1388 under Bolognese rule, replacing an earlier square tower. From 1424 to 1478 it was held by the Manfredi family; under the Riario-Sforza and Caterina Sforza it reached the height of its military strength and its present appearance. After passing to the Papal States in 1506 it lost its military role and became a noble residence; it then housed the town hall until 1985. Restoration work, including the excavation of the moat, began in the early 1980s.
The Rocca has a quadrangular plan, three round towers and a square keep about 22 metres high, with swallowtail battlements.
The museum tells the story of the landscape of the Faentino Apennines, from the Middle Ages to human work on the land, with visual and sound installations and models illustrating the history of the area and the defensive features of the fortress. It includes an archaeological section with finds from the territory from the Iron Age to the Roman period, set up together with the Archaeological Superintendence of Emilia-Romagna. The Rocca also houses the documentation centre of the Parco regionale della Vena del Gesso Romagnola.
