About the museum
The Imola diocesan museum was inaugurated in 1962 and is housed in the bishop’s palace, next to the cathedral of San Cassiano. It holds over two thousand works dating from the 9th to the 21st century: a picture gallery with paintings from the 14th to the 19th century, liturgical textiles, coins and medals, contemporary sacred art, terracottas and sacred silverware.
Part of the route is a house museum: the red apartment, the Pio VII gallery and the green apartment were inhabited by the popes Pius VII and Pius IX during the years in which they were bishops of Imola. The complex also includes the Carriage Museum, with two 18th-century berlines and neoclassical liveries and, since May 2021, the Giardino storico Monsignor Giovanni Signani (historic garden), open on the same weekend days as the museum.
