About the museum
The Museo San Domenico is housed in a former Dominican convent founded in the 13th century, with two 15th-century cloisters. The Dominicans occupied it until 1797; in the Napoleonic period it became a barracks and, after restorations in the 1970s, it was assigned to house the civic museums of Imola.
The route presents the civic art collections, with more than six hundred works—paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and medals—from the 14th century to today, together with the Museo Giuseppe Scarabelli, a collection of archaeological finds and natural history objects arranged in the taste of the 19th century. The itinerary also includes the Domus del Rasoio, a Roman-era excavation with mosaics, which is still being prepared for visits.
A restoration workshop operates in the museum and looks after the collections of Imola Musei, including those of Palazzo Tozzoni and the Rocca Sforzesca. The Museo San Domenico is accessible without architectural barriers and offers educational workshops for schools and families.
