About the museum
The museum is in Via Lauria, a small street near the historic staircase of San Giovanni, in the medieval centre of Chiaramonte Gulfi. It reconstructs the rooms in which the typical embroideries of Sicilian sfilato were made, with furnishings, photographs and craft tools.
Its aim is to preserve evidence that would otherwise risk being lost, and to form the first nucleus of a multipurpose facility open to the local community. Many works date from the period between the late 18th century and the 20th century.
The collection comprises over two hundred pieces, including curtains, tablecloths, towels, lampshades and sacred vestments, as well as a wooden loom and looms and tools from eighteenth-century Sicily. The techniques represented include sfilato 400, in the darning-stitch variant, and the sfilato 500 and 700 styles; some items recall the Caterina de' Medici and Empire styles.
