About the museum
The ossuary was built to give a dignified burial to the fallen of the two battles of Custoza, fought in July 1848 and on 24 June 1866 during the First and Third Italian Wars of Independence against the Austrian Empire. In 1877 almost two thousand soldiers’ remains, buried in mass graves, were exhumed and gathered in the monument, which was inaugurated on 24 June 1879.
Initially a place of devotional pilgrimage and later of patriotic tourism, the site has become a historic place for passing on the memory of the Risorgimento. The monument is owned by the Province of Verona and in recent years has been progressively enhanced, with the creation of new exhibition rooms in the former custodian’s house.
Besides the crypt with the soldiers’ bones, the complex includes a chapel and a small archaeological museum of the battle with the objects recovered during the exhumation of 1877: uniforms, weapons and everyday items. In the rooms of the former custodian’s house, multimedia installations, images and panels allow visitors to immerse themselves in the period described.
