About the museum

The museum is housed in a small palace of the 12th–13th century in the medieval San Pellegrino quarter of Viterbo, bought by the municipality and donated to the Sodalizio dei Facchini di Santa Rosa to serve as its headquarters. It has been regularly open to the public since 1994 and, since 2008, has been run by the company Archeoares.

The district, built in peperino, the local volcanic stone, has kept its 13th-century appearance, with small squares, external staircases (profferli), arches and towers, because it has always remained inhabited and was not transformed by Renaissance renovations. On the same square stand the church of San Pellegrino, dating from the 11th century, the Palazzo degli Alessandri and the Torre Scacciaricci.

The exhibition occupies two floors. On the ground floor, ten scale models of the Macchine di Santa Rosa carried in procession over time are displayed in chronological order: from the oldest surviving one, dating from 1690, to the 20th-century models and the current “Ali di Luce”, designed by the architect and facchino (porter) Raffaele Ascenzi. On the first floor an audiovisual room shows films of recent and past carries, to revive the emotion of the evening of 3 September. The top floor, closed to the public, houses the room of the Consiglio direttivo (board) of the Sodalizio.
