About the museum
The museum, open to the public since 1996, was founded by the Fondazione Carivit and the Municipality of Viterbo, and is on the ground floor of Palazzo Brugiotti in the historic centre, near the medieval San Pellegrino quarter. The Lazio Region has awarded it a quality mark for meeting museum standards.
The rooms display 447 finds that trace the development of ceramics produced in Upper Lazio from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century, from unglazed ware to glazed and enamelled ware, and on to moulded products. The medieval section is the largest and includes clay-body ceramics, pieces painted under glaze, early maiolica in manganese brown and copper green, zaffera and relief green. These are followed by Renaissance ceramics and a section on the apothecary, with pieces from the seventeenth-century pharmacy of the Ospedale Grande degli Infermi in Viterbo and the “Ceramiche da Spezieria e d’Amore” from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Most of the objects come from medieval butti dug into the tuff beneath the houses, recovered during the restoration of the historic centre. The palace, linked to the opening of Via Farnesiana promoted by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, is documented as early as 1573; the Brugiotti and Cobelluzzi families, and later the Banco di Roma, owned it.
