About the museum
The Museo del Territorio di Riccione is the municipal museum that holds the oldest historical and archaeological evidence of the town and its surroundings, from prehistory to the Roman era. It is dedicated to Luigi Ghirotti and is located on Viale Lazio.
The route begins with geology and natural history, with fossils, rocks, minerals and remains of prehistoric animals such as bison, elephants, bears and rhinoceroses. Finds from Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Metal Age settlements follow, with objects of stone, bone, pottery and metal, leading to the section on the Roman colonisation. Here, material from San Lorenzo in Strada, a settlement along the ancient Via Flaminia, is displayed alongside finds from nearby villas and production sites, including unguent bottles, oil lamps, toiletry items and coins.
The museum has an educational and outreach role and offers workshops. A move to a new site in the former Fornace Piva is planned; its new display will replace the current exhibition.
