About the museum
The Museo della Regina, formerly the Antiquarium, has been housed since 2000 in the building of the former Ospitale dei Pellegrini (pilgrims' hospice), dating from the late 16th century. With the move, the archaeology and maritime exhibition routes were renewed and expanded, the latter with an ethnographic approach. It is a civic museum run by the municipality of Cattolica.
The archaeology section illustrates traces of early Romanisation, with amphorae and pottery recovered at the mouth of the Conca, the Roman road network with the Via Flaminia and the hypothesis of a mansio, a staging post for travellers, midway between Rimini and Pesaro. There are also reconstructions of everyday Roman life, covering housing, food, personal care and trade.
The maritime section presents the shipyards and the construction of the typical Adriatic boats, the fishing methods used until motorisation, and the life of sailors and their families, with reference to local history. The museum also organises educational activities and guided tours.
