About the museum

The museum is housed in the ambulatory of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in the heart of Aosta, and is run by the parish. It holds the treasure of the cathedral and works from the valley's parishes, offering an account of Valdostan sacred art from the 13th to the 18th century, with particular attention to the Gothic of the Western Alps.

The collection includes codices, paintings, sculptures, stained glass, reliquaries, goldsmith work and liturgical vestments. Among the best-known pieces are a Roman cameo of the 1st century, set in a 13th-century gold frame and once used as the clasp of a cope, and the consular ivory diptych of Honorius of 406, from the late Roman age. Also on display are a 14th-century rock crystal cross from Rhêmes, Gothic sculptures such as a carved wooden altar frontal, Limoges enamels, silver reliquary busts and the reliquary casket of Saint Grato, begun by Guglielmo di Locana and completed by Jean de Malines.

The ticket also includes, as an option, a visit to the 11th-century frescoes preserved in the attic of the cathedral.
