About the museum
The Villa della Consolata is a Roman residence built outside the walls of Augusta Praetoria, near the road network that led to the Great St Bernard Pass, in an area where traces of human presence predating the foundation of the city in 25 BC have been identified.
The excavations of 1971, followed by building works, brought to light most of the structures visible today; investigations from the mid-1980s have since expanded knowledge of the central part of the complex, with the tetrastyle atrium with impluvium and the tablinum.
The building has a rectangular, compact plan and devotes most of its space to the residential part, the pars urbana, reserved for the owner and guests. Few service rooms, or rooms linked to the processing of agricultural products, remain, which suggests a connection with a landed estate. Some rooms still show remains of mosaic floors and traces of the heating system.
