About the museum
The Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Orso stands just outside the Roman walls of Aosta, and its origins go back, in archaic form, to the 5th century. Around the year 1000 Bishop Anselmo ordered its refoundation with a three-aisled basilica plan; the bell tower, 46 metres high, has been the tallest in the Aosta Valley since the 12th century. Around the middle of the 15th century the prior Giorgio di Challant gave the church the late Gothic appearance seen today, with a choir with carved wooden stalls.
Next to the church are the Romanesque cloister, linked to the Augustinian Rule of 1132, with some forty historiated capitals, and the chapel of the Priorato. The most precious objects in the complex, partly kept in the treasury, include a chalice attributed to the 13th century, the reliquary arm and the casket of Sant'Orso in embossed and gilded silver.
According to the sources available, the treasury has no fixed opening hours: it can be visited by appointment, through the parish. Since 2019 the monumental complex (cloister, chapel of the Priorato and Ottonian frescoes in the attic) has been managed by the cultural association Mirabilia.
